Show them that it is neither pleasant nor beneficial for the student. If possible show them statistics for the effect of missed homework on overall grades. Setting a regular, definite block of time — say pm — helps teach them time management. Another reason to set an early time is that it enables consequences to be brought into play. If homework is allowed to be the last thing at night and the child is allowed to play on a computer or watch TV all night before that, how can consequences be applied?
The easier you can make it for them to take part, the better the chances they will. Getting students to complete homework is a typical problem for teachers — especially with students who lack motivation. Classroom Management Tip 1: Make sure the work appeals to them — It sounds obvious, but the more appealing you can make your homework in terms of having sufficient challenge, interest and practical value, the more chance your students will attempt it.
Classroom Management Tip 2: Make it achievable — Ideally, it should be a continuation of classwork rather than introducing something new so they know how to do it. Classroom Management Tip 3: Include an element of choice — Choice is an incredibly powerful motivator so it should be included in homework tasks.

Students place their homework on the corner of their desk before starting their morning work. You walk around and collect homework from each student. You are able to greet each student at their seat first thing in the morning.
Students place their homework in a pile at a central location on or near their table group. Homework collection is fairly quick. The routine that has been most efficient for my students is very similar to the group station routine with an added layer of organization. The Homework Drop Box makes turning in assignments quick and easy for students and teachers. When students arrive the following morning, they walk to their group drop box, find the file folder with their name on it, and drop their homework inside the folder.
Students place their assignments in their folder standing tall in portrait-style rather than laying down in landscape-style. The teacher can then grab the top of all the papers at once and pull the assignments out into a neatly organized pile. Having a smaller file box at each group, rather than a larger one for the entire class eliminates the problem of a long line to turn in homework. This means students settle into their seats and start their morning work without wasted time.
Although some of the changes we face as teachers tend to throw off our equilibrium for a moment, focusing on smaller changes that benefit our students helps bring us back to a more balanced and efficient groove in the classroom. If you are interested in trying the Homework Drop Box routine in your own classroom, grab my free Homework Drop Box Labels here and my favorite sturdy file bins here.

Mine is a student job. Warmly, Laura. I love this idea of the homework drop box. I am currently observing in a first-grade classroom and I can see how crazy homework collection can be. As a preservice teacher I love reading blogs like this. Being organized is a very important part of classroom management. The homework drop box is such a creative, yet efficient way for students to turn in their homework. The homework drop box allows students to place their homework portrait-style rather than landscape style which is beneficial for the teacher.
This way the teacher can notice quickly who has and has not turned in their homework. I hope to use this efficient homework collection technique in my own classroom one day. Excellent tup! Thanks so much for the idea, sharing the labels, and link for purchasing the boxes!

Hi Amy, yes we use EnVision and yes the enrichment math units are very nicely aligned. I LOVE this idea! Channeling student behaviors, interests, and attention into productive learning paths requires intuitive lesson planning. First, focus on how students will be able to demonstrate that they understand and have achieved the learning objective, emphasizes Grant Wiggins, coauthor with Jason McTighe of Understanding by Design.
Then build learning activities that lead students to that point. According to Robert Marzano, an education researcher, the focus of our lesson planning efforts should be getting students to ask and answer their own questions. Coming up with those types of questions on the spur of the moment can be difficult, but with a little advanced thought, you can incorporate those types of questions into your lesson plans.
Ultimately, the best discipline management plan is a good lesson plan. These standards should promote learning, as well as consequences that diminish or eliminate behaviors that impede learning. They shouldn't be so detailed as to list every behavior and the corresponding consequence for failure to comply, but they should hit the main points regarding showing respect, communicating correctly, and coming prepared to learn.
The standards should also interact smoothly with the other four components, especially teaching your students how learning takes place in your classroom. I have learned to frame each lesson as it is taught. This means that for each learning activity, I explain the standards of performance, as well as the limits of behavior. For example:.
You have 15 minutes, and you will be working with your partner on designing a structure out of newspaper that will reach the ceiling. You may use inside voices to quietly discuss your plans with your partner. If you have questions, please put the red cup on your desk, and I will come and help you as soon as possible. Meanwhile, keep working on other things until I get there. Throughout the year, we have to be consistent and persistent in developing relationships of trust, following and teaching the best learning theories, honoring student time, being responsive to student behaviors and needs in our lesson plans, and holding true to high and rigorous standards of learning behavior.
We also need to be flexible and adjust to tangles that can derail even the best management plans. What classroom management practices have worked best for you? I have discovered that there are five components of effective classroom management that establish structures strong enough to entice and motivate student learning: Developing effective working relationships with students Training students on how learning takes place in your classroom Protecting and leveraging time Anticipating student behaviors in well-written lesson plans Establishing standards of behavior that promote student learning 1.
Train Your Students on How Learning Takes Place in Your Classroom Your students need to know that you do not expect them to instantly learn, that everyone has an individual process for learning, and that if they follow your guidance, they will be successful in learning. Protect and Leverage Your Time An effective classroom manager must be prepared with materials and know how to transition students from one activity to another without wasting time.
Some schools offer more than material and include additional instructions.
